Happy Canada Day from Haines Jct., Yukon

July 1st:  Happy Canada Day!!!  I want to get this post done before I get scooped by other bloggers.  We just got back to our deluxe B&B (Kluane Green Sprout) here in Haines Junction.  This morning we visited the joint Yukon Information/Parks Canada/Da Ku Cultural Centre.  Amazing facility.  Make sure you put it on your list of places to stop next time you are here.

Okay, the parade....  We were just leaving the aforementioned facility and found ourselves at the start of the Canada Day parade.  The Alaska Highway was completely shut down for this event causing significant delays for travellers.  The parade lasted about 25 minutes and in that time over 6 vehicles were unable to proceed on the Alaska Highway.  Police and volunteers, as well as a few dogs, were on hand to marshal the parade and control the traffic and the many dozens of people who sporadically lined the parade route.  Many tourists joined the townsfolk in the celebration, many wielding DSLR cameras with large lenses.  After the parade exited the Alaska Highway the backup of traffic was cleared leaving a ghostly silence save for the distant echo of emergency vehicle (part of the parade) sirens from the convention centre parking lot, which was were the parade ended.

I have included a number of photos from the parade.  The first one is the lead group as they entered onto the Alaska Highway.  Although a cloudy day you can still see the majestic peaks of some of the mountains in the St. Elias range in Kluane National Park.  How Canadian is that??!!

Float by "14 Acre Farm" near Haines Jct.  When we yelled "Happy Canada Day" the lady at the back of the float called back, "We're from Saskatchewan".  I called back, "That's okay, it's still in Canada right?"  She said, "Yes, it is"

    You are too funny. Happy belated Canada Day eh! Poor Saskabush.....taking the punches. I have a friend from there. Made of tough stock and she reminds me of Dana. Osoyoos parade wasn't much bigger ...and it looks like the floats in your Haines parade were better appointed. 38 Celsius here yesterday. Have fun.

June 19th - Prince Rupert, B.C. Dana and I lived in Prince Rupert from March 1981 to September 1984.  We moved to Rupert from Calgary where we had spent 3 years working rather than living.  Prince Rupert was where we began to live.  Driving into Rupert my mind was alive with some vivid and other sketchy memories.  I remarked to Dana that Prince Rupert was a place of connections.  Of course the main one was my Mom and Dad.  Mom and Dad lived in Prince Rupert for several years in the late ’70’s.  Dad loved it in Rupert.  He really dived into the “sea” life.  After he left Rupert he would often remark that he “had sea air in his blood”.  I think Mom liked it too but maybe not as much as Dad did.  We met some wonderful people in Prince Rupert, some who became friends for life.  One who we metaphorically “adopted” as the child we never had.  Although our lives took us in different directions we still exchange Christmas cards ...

U.S.A. Independence Day - Haines, Alaska

July 4th, posted on the 5th....  (Canadians need to stop complaining about poor internet service) Haines, Alaska, population give or take 1,500.  The big story of the day, and it will be in all the newspapers today, is the 4th of July parade.  Having viewed the July 1st parade in Haines Junction, Yukon we were anxious to see what the good citizens of this small coastal Alaska town would come up with.  Well, they certainly did not disappoint us. The parade began at 11:00 with a bang, or make that boom as a canon was fired across town in Fort Seward.  A flock of pigeons were released or maybe they were just frightened from their perch by the booming canon. Living the "Wildlife" on the Yukon or Bust Adventure

June 30th.  We are in Haines Junction, Yukon.  Population just over 1,000.  For the next 2 nights we are firmly ensconced in a 5 Star B&B called, "Kluane Green Sprout".  If you are ever in Haines Junction, book a stay here.  You will not regret it! I'm skipping over Dawson photos and stories of Beaver Creek and jumping right into our "wild" day on the road.  Actually, it was a day and a half.  Yesterday we saw our first Moose.  I got some photos of 2 Moose in Tok, Alaska.  Mother Moose and a calf.  They were on the move so the photo is not the best but it does tell the story. Today we departed Beaver Creek around 8:00.  We drove south on the Alaska Highway, camera at the ready for any animal that moved.  It was slow going but I did manage to get a photo of the rare Yukon Kangaroo eating Fireweed plants.  Some call this beautiful animal a Snowshoe Hare.  You decide for yourself.
